Holga 120mm TLR: Sequoia

Image
Welp, I'm really behind on my photo editing. This series is actually almost a year old. Last July I went to the Mineral King area of Sequoia National Park for a weekend. If you're not familiar, this section of the park is on the south side, and somewhat removed from the main area of the park with its famous massive trees. Getting there involves turning off the main road outside the park and driving for an hour along a thin, winding road that's mostly dirt. The first time I went out there I arrived after dark, and was convinced that I was lost and about to drive off a cliff. But, in the morning I woke up to pristine, uncrowded access to high sierra country that's as beautiful as you might find in the more busy areas moving north through the main part of the park and up to Yosemite. This visit I did the hike past Franklin Lakes up to Franklin Pass, which at 11,800 feet above sea level gives you majestic view of backpacking country. Round trip up and back was about 17 m

Lightning In A Bottle

Last month I was lucky enough to go to Lightning In A Bottle for free with my friend Jason, thanks to KXSC. This amazing music, art and movement festival takes place in California, this year about half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Though I had never been, I had heard good things and was excited. Surprisingly, the fest exceeded all expectations. Tickets included free camping. I woke up every morning and went to a free yoga class. Then I spent all day going to inspiring talks and workshops under big oak trees on everything from permaculture to qigong to feminism to mandala drawing. When things cooled off in the evenings, I wandered back and forth among the three main stages dancing the night away to the best up-and-coming electronica talents, as well as a couple established greats. This comprehensive, and well-organized approach to producing a festival created a unique and palpable culture that touched all facets of the event and engendered a lot of positive vibes. It fe

So, I've taken up biking to Santa Monica 3 times a week for hour and a half kundalini yoga sessions, and I've also been doing a lot of deep thinking and meditation. All that led to this contemplative mix, that's also a little strangely upbeat. Grab your yoga mat, and let's flow through this unique set that includes a new single from Caribou, shamanic drumming, a little trance, and some chanting. Brought to you thanks to KXSC.org and the University of Southern California. Listen live online Tuesdays at 8pm PT/11pm ET. Make More Noise 51 (Lightning In A Bottle Recap)

Thanks to KXSC Radio and fellow alumni Jason, I was lucky enough to attend Lighting In A Bottle for the first time this year. If you've never been to this amazing festival, you're missing out. I'd describe it as the best elements of Coachella and Burning Man combined. During the day I went to yoga classes and workshops on everything from how to draw mandalas to permaculture, and at at night I danced my cares away to some of the best electronic acts making beats right now. Though, I can't really recreate the daytime experience for those who missed it, I can offer a highlight of the best tunes I heard and grooved out to. With no further ado, here's the first episode of my newly resurrected radio show, Make More Noise . After a year hiatus, I bring you highlights from Lightning In A Bottle 2014: new artists discovered and old favorites celebrated! If you missed this amazing festival held in the heart of California, here's your chance to hear the best of the best
