Big Bend

Image
In March on my way to SXSW, I took an hundred mile detour south, so I could finally visit Big Bend National Park . Forget the rest of the state, Big Bend is what everyone, including Texans, thinks Texas looks like. Big mesas rising over expansive planes and a snaking Rio Grande separating us from the adventures and bad decisions in Mexico. I was in between cameras at the time, and at the last second bought a Kodak Fun Saver disposable camera to try and capture a few shots. Here's what I managed to get that was half decent.

Mellow Waters

Image
Back in January I went to Miami for a wedding, but rather than stay at the boring, standard hotel with the other guests, I couchsurfed at the Mellow Waters Commune. World traveler, bread baker, and former sheep herder, Zach had finally come home to Miami, and together with a few childhood friends had set about turning one of their parent's beautiful homes into a beautiful community. On Friday night I helped cook a delicious, huge communal dinner, which we ate under the stars by candle light. The backyard had a koi pond, hammock, chickens, ducks, pool, and a collection of bonsai trees. It was perfect, so much better than bar hopping and spending the night on the floor of a hotel room. One day I hope to have a home like that, a place for friends to gather. Here are a few photos I took with my new Superheadz Golden Half camera.

Superheadz Golden Half: Death Valley

Image
Got a new toy camera for Christmas this past year, used it immediately, and finally got around to processing the role. Superheadz Golden Half Camera is a 35mm half-frame camera. This role was scanned as individual photos, but I'll also be posting a role soon that was scanned as two photos per the full 35mm frame. Not totally thrilled with this camera just yet, but I'll have to try again soon based on what I learned from these results. Trial and error is the name of the game with amateur, analog photography. This first set was taken back in January at Death Valley National Park , one of my favorite national parks. The terrain of the park is surreal, unparalleled, and I love the slot canyon hikes. I was in a somewhat altered state of mind when taking these photos, and I feel like that's somewhat reflected in them.

Compassion

"Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creates and the whole of nature and its beauty." - Albert Einstein "I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures." - Lao Tzu "Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive." - Dali Lama
