Kings Canyon (Pt. 2)

Image
Happy Thanksgiving, dear readers! I'm thankful for reveling in the great outdoors, and nature's endless beauty. To celebrate I thought I'd post my second set from Kings Canyon National Park . Last week I posted a Kings Canyon (Pt. 1) , a color series. But, as I mentioned in that post, I've been thinking a lot about texture lately, and sometimes that's best communicated in black and white. Occasionally the green of the trees, and the blue of the sky distracts from the way a canyon can dramatically light a mountain range at sunset. And of course, the Sierras in B&W is always a lovely homage to my favorite photographer, Ansel Adams.

Kings Canyon (Pt. 1)

In July I finally got out to Kings Canyon National Park , one of the last national parks in southern California for me to get. The trip gave me a second chance to use my new Nikon Coolpix AW100. Though I was still getting used to it, I did manage to snap a few shots I like. Lately, I've been focusing a little more on texture than sweeping landscapes. That's even more apparent in the black and white series from Kings Canyon that I'll be posting next week. For now, I hope you enjoy these color photos.

Cult of Youth Play Los Globos

Image
Last Sunday KXSC Radio and IHEARTCOMIX presented Cult of Youth at Los Globos in Silverlake. And despite my exhaustion and sobriety after a long Halloween weekend, I stayed past 1am to see them play. My perseverance was amply rewarded with one of the best live shows I've seen in a while. Earlier this fall Cult of Youth released their third full-length, Love Will Prevail , on Sacred Bones. The album was well received by critics, especially the discerning DJs at KXSC. Where as the first album was more of a prototype, a solo side project of Sean Ragon, and the second album featured a full-band making an honest thrust at a folk punk sound, the third album is a cohesive work of art showcasing a truly unique sound. I've tried to leave such blunt analogies out of my more recent writing, but I'm afraid this can't be helped. Imagine if Joy Division and Lucero gave birth to a noisy, rebellious progeny with experimental/industrial/gothic tendencies. That's what Cult of
